David Newell-Smith

(1937-2017), Photographer

Artist of 91 portraits
Born in Kent, David Newell-Smith began photographing whilst on National Service in the Royal Air Force. He joined the staff of The Observer in 1964 and became a frequent contributor. Newell-Smith documented the 1966 colliery tragedy at Abefan, the 1967 war in Jordan, the 1968 student riots in Paris, and photographed 1960s celebrities such as Twiggy and the Rolling Stones. He also attended Labour and Conservative party conferences and captured key moments in political history. In these close-up and often highly expressive portraits taken with a Nikon F camera fitted with a specially adapted 500mm Russian mirror lens, Margaret Thatcher, Harold Wilson, William Whitelaw, Jeremy Thorpe, George Brown, Jennie Lee, Enoch Powell and many more are captured deep in thought or conversation.
