Marion Holmes (née Milner)

(1867-1943), Suffragette

Sitter in 1 portrait
Freelance journalist and writer, Holmes served on the Committee of the Society for Women Journalists and established the Margate Pioneer Society 'to further the interests of women' amongst other initiatives. After moving to Croydon in 1907, she became president of the local Women's Social and Political Union, declaring that 'The women of this country are in the position of political starvation'. While a member of the Women's Freedom League, she co-edited The Vote with Cicely Hamilton. Holmes produced biographies of suffragettes and wrote the ABC of Votes for Women, published in 1910 and 1913. Several of her plays were performed at suffrage events and in 1918 she was the first female election agent in Keighley.
