Labour MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington, since 1987, when she became the first black woman elected to the British Parliament. Abbott is of Jamaican heritage, born in Paddington, London, her parents immigrated to Britain in the 1950's. She has served on the Foreign Affairs Select Committee, taking a particular interest in human rights. She was formerly a Race Relations Officer for the National Council for Civil Liberties, a television researcher and reporter, and a Press Officer for the GLC and Lambeth Borough Council. From 2000 she has been a representative for equality and women's issues in the Mayor of London's Cabinet.
