Anohni is a transgender songwriter, performer, artist and activist. Born in Chichester, West Sussex, she first came to prominence as the lead singer and songwriter for the award-winning band Antony and the Johnsons, who released their debut self-titled album in 2000. In 2005 they released I Am a Bird Now which was awarded the Mercury Music Prize. Further success followed with The Crying Light (2009) the band’s third studio album which reached #1 in the European Billboard charts. Other releases with Antony and the Johnsons include Swanlights (2010) and Cut the World (2012). In 2016 Anohni released the solo album Hopelessness which was nominated for both Mercury and Brit Awards. That same year she became only the second openly transgender artist to be nominated for an Academy Award, for the song Manta Ray from the environmental documentary Racing Extinction.
