Bamba Müller

(1848-1947), Maharani of Lahore

Maharani Bamba Duleep Singh (née Müller)

Sitter in 1 portrait
Maharani Bamba Duleep Singh (née Müller) was the illegitimate daughter of a German banker and his Abyssinian mistress who was a Coptic Christian slave. She was brought up and educated by Christian missionaries in Cairo, later becoming a teacher. Whilst teaching at the missionary and despite speaking only Arabic, she was encouraged to enter into a correspondence courtship with Maharaja Duleep Singh after he contacted the missionary in the hope of finding a Christian wife of eastern descent. After the couple were married in Egypt (1864), they settled in England at Elveden, Norfolk and had six children: Prince Victor Duleep Singh, Prince Frederick, Prince Edward, Princess Bamba Jindan, Princess Katherine and Princess Sophia Alexandria, who became a prominent suffragette.
