Eric John Crozier
(1914-1994), Writer and theatrical producerSitter in 10 portraits
Crozier began his career in 1936 producing plays for the BBC, and three years later joined the Old Vic Company. As stage director for Sadler's Wells Opera he was invited by Britten to produce Peter Grimes (1945) and The Rape of Lucretia (1946). He went on to write the libretto for Albert Herring (1947), and assist E.M. Forster with the libretto for Billy Budd (1951). A founding director of the English Opera Group in 1947, he helped Britten establish the Aldeburgh Festival the following year.
