Athene Seyler
(1889-1990), ActressSitter in 21 portraits
Encouraged by Sir Henry Irving to become an actress, Seyler made her professional debut as Pamela Grey in The Truants (1909). In the early 1920s she attracted attention in the Restoration revivals mounted by Sir Nigel Playfair at the Lyric, Hammersmith. She joined the Old Vic Company in 1933 where her roles included Mistress Overdone in Measure for Measure, Mrs Frail in Love for Love and Lady Bracknell in The Importance of Being Earnest.
