Broadcaster, journalist, writer and Labour Party Peer. Born in Stockport and educated at Newnham College, Cambridge, Bakewell's television career in current affairs and the arts began with Late Night Line-Up (1965-72), followed by Heart of the Matter (1988-2000), through which she became known for her intelligent approach and appealing delivery. Her books include the autobiography The Centre of the Bed (2004) and novel All the Nice Girls (2009). In 2008, she was made a DBE for her services to journalism and the arts and appointed a voice for older people by the UK Government. In 2011 she was appointed Baroness Bakewell of Stockport.
