Reg Butler(1913-1981), Sculptor
Reginald Cotterell ('Reg') Butler
Sitter in 12 portraits
Butler trained as an architect and worked as a blacksmith before becoming Henry Moore's assistant and developing his own talent as a sculptor. His first solo exhibition was held in 1949 at the Hanover Gallery in London and two years later he was appointed as a teacher at the Slade School of Fine Art. In 1952 he exhibited at the Venice Biennale and in the same year won a much publicised competition for a Monument to the Unknown Political Prisoner which, however, was never made.
