French painter and photographer. Born in Brasso, Hungary, and trained as an artist. Arrived in Paris in 1923 to work as a journalist. From 1930 photographed nightlife scenes on the streets of Paris and contributed photographs to Lilliput. His first book Paris de Nuit (1933), caused a sensation. Camera in Paris (1949) and Graffiti (1960) comprise a significant contribution to twentieth-century photography. Brassaï's collaboration with Harper's Bazaar lasted twenty years.
