(1867-1931), Volunteer nurse and yachtswoman; former wife of Sir John Baird, and later wife of Lord Charles Kennedy (later 5th Marquess of Ailsa)Sitter in 6 portraits
Prior to the war, Lady Baird worked as a nurse at St Bartholomew's Hospital in London. With the outbreak of war she volunteered and served as a nurse in Belgian and English hospitals. In recognition of her work she received five war decorations and had her name added to the roll of honourable service of the Red Cross Society. After the war she pursued her love of sailing, becoming one of the most famous female yacht racers in the world. Among her sporting achievements, she was part of the team that won the American Cup in 1921 and in 1925 she won the King of Spain's Cup, for which she was the only woman competitor.
