Alistair Maclean

(1922-1987), Novelist

Sitter in 3 portraits
Alistair Stuart MacLean was a Scottish novelist who wrote successful thrillers or adventure stories, the best known of which are perhaps The Guns of Navarone and Where Eagles Dare. During the Second World War, MacLean joined the Royal Navy, where he served on the Arctic convoys. His wartime experiences were to provide valuable material for his fiction. After the war he studied English Literature at Glasgow University, and then trained as a teacher. His first short story was published in 1954, and his first novel, HMS Ulysses, a year later. The book became one of the best-selling British novels of the twentieth century. MacLean gave up teaching to become a full-time writer; his books sold by the million.
