Poet and novelist; her eight volumes of verse, many illustrated with her own comic drawings, include Not Waving but Drowning (1957); also the author of three novels of which the first, Novel on Yellow Paper (1936) is the best known. In the 1960s Smith built a popular reputation as a performer of her own work, making a number of broadcasts and recordings.
