Sitter in 25 portraits
A well-known economist and former Foreign Office Minister, Dalton had served as Minister of Economic Warfare and as President of the Board of Trade during the War before becoming Labour's Chancellor in 1945. The emergencies endemic in post-war Britain coupled with a commitment to Welfare legislation made his term a challenging time, Dalton resigned in 1947 after inadvertently revealing details of his budget to a journalist.
