Ransome began writing children's stories at the turn of the century. Escaping from an unhappy first marriage, he worked as a foreign correspondent in Russia during the First World War and the Russian Revolution. There he met Trotsky's secretary, Evgenia Shelepin whom he eventually married. In 1929 he gave up journalism to write Swallows and Amazons, the first in a series of twelve books featuring the Walker children.
