Cecil Scott ('C.S.') Forester
(1899-1966), NovelistSitter associated with 15 portraits
Forester is best known as the author of a series of Horatio Hornblower novels set during the Napoleonic Wars. Forester worked as a correspondent for The Times during the Spanish civil war and he was in Czechoslovakia during the Nazi occupation of Prague in 1939. He gained success with his first novel, Payment Deferred (1926); other important works include Brown on Resolution (1929), The Gun (1933), The General (1936), and The Ship (1943). Many of his novels were adapted by himself onto the screen, most notably The African Queen (1935).
