Sitter in 18 portraits
Bookseller. Managing-Director of Foyle's from 1963. Daughter of William Foyle, elder of the two founding brothers of London's most famous bookshop. Launched the successful and ongoing Literary Lunches, which attracted publicity and helped keep the firm afloat in the 1930s, with speakers from the literary world as well as public and media figures. Christina Foyle' also developed book clubs, a lecture agency, art gallery and publishing. Lived with her husband, Ronald Batty at Beeleigh Abbey in Maldon, Essex where she kept a wide variety of animals and birds.
