Born in the USA specifically Indiana, she moved to the United Kingdom in the 1920's-30's and had a daughter named Susan. At the begining of the war she moved back to the US this time, New York with her daughter leaving behind her husband Stanley Johnson who was serving in the British Army. He was injured, forcing Elaina and Susan to return to England, the family remained in the country side until the war was over and they could return to their home in West London

Her date of birth was January 7 1899 and she died in April 1985. She was born in Princeton Indiana, grand daughter of Governor Alvin Peterson Hovey, Governor of Indiana 1889-1991. At the age of 18 she won a scholarship to study at the Chicago school of Music and at 21 she won a year's scholarship to the opera house of Ghent in Belgium. The soprano got sick and she had to go on and sing the doll in the Tales of Hoffman, and so her career started.

There was a performance of of Messiah in Durham Cathedral in the nineteen fourties which was advertised as having 1000 singers in the choir. The soprano soloist was Elena Danieli and I think the contralto was Constance Shacklock, although my memory there may be misleading me. I was in my teens at the time. I am sure more details will be somewhere in the Durham Cathedral archive,
