Naturalist and poet; Baker devised a system of instructing the deaf, which caught the attention of Daniel Defoe, whose youngest daughter Sophia he married in 1729. Baker was a significant contributor to the popularisation of microscopy, publishing two books, The Microscope Made Easy (1743) and Employment for the Microscope (1753) that were extremely popular throughout the eighteenth century.
