On 11 August 1952, following the abdication of his father King Talal, Hussein Ibn Talal became King of Jordan. At the time of his death in 1999 he was the longest reigning King. Born and educated in Amman, he received further education overseas, completing his military education at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst in England. He worked tirelessly to resolve disputes between Arab states, working towards Arab-Israeli peace. He had a deep commitment to democracy, civil liberties and basic human rights. He married his fourth wife Queen Noor in June 1978, a year after the loss of his beloved third wife Alia al-Hussein in an plane crash. He is the father of eleven children through his marriages. Through his lineage he is a 40th generation direct descendent of Prophet Muhammad.
