Stage and film actor often playing the part of a nincompoop. Made his stage debut as a robot in R.U.R. (1939) followed by comedy revues. Began film career in 1947. Successes include Lucky Jim (1957), the Bouting Brothers' I'm All Right, Jack (1959) and Heavens Above (1963). On television played Bertie Wooster in The World of Wooster (1965) and Dorothy L. Sayer's detective Lord Peter Wimsey (1972).
