John Hewson

(died 1662), Parliamentary commander and regicide

Sitter in 6 portraits
Hewson worked his way up in the ranks to Colonel of one of the regiments of the New Model Army. Parliament passed an act against religious festivals and when the Mayor of Canterbury tried to enforce this by banning Christmas, there was a riot and John Hewson's Regiment of Foot were sent to restore order which they did quickly. During the Second Civil War, Hewson's regiment went with General Fairfax to suppress Royalist uprising. He supported Pride's Purge and was appointed to the High Court of Justice. Hewson signed Charles I death warrant and led a regiment in Cromwell's invasion of Ireland where he lost an eye at the siege of Kilkenny. With Restoration imminent, Hewson fled to Amsterdam in 1660.
