Margaret Rawlings (Lady Barlow)

(1906-1996), Actress; wife of Sir Robert Barlow

Sitter in 36 portraits
Equally acclaimed in tragedy or comedy, Rawlings's celebrated performances included Lady Macbeth and Eliza Doolittle. In 1936 she played Katie O'Shea in Parnell by Elsie T. Schauffler, and Rawlings re-wrote this part herself when the play was banned. In 1938 she was much acclaimed as Karen Selby in The Flashing Stream, a part that had been written for her by Charles Morgan. Rawlings's later triumphs included performances in The Importance of Being Earnest (1946), The Apple Cart (1953) and Oedipus the King (1964). She also served as vice-president of Equity.
