I am presently reviewing family links with Sir Edwin Cooper ARA being grandson of his sister, Emily. His memorabilia - art collection and antiques - were transferred to her following his death in 1942. It is evident that he had great affection for his sister which incidentally resulted in her marriage to one of his highly regarded draughtsmen, George A Webster.
It is also apparent that Edwin had an enduring friendship with Sir David Murray RA. Eight of the artist's oil paintings are in my possession together with two of his watercolours. A copy of the publication "Selection from some of the recent works of Sir Edwin Cooper, ARA. Exhibition at the galleries of the Royal Institute of British Architects on the occasion of the presentation of the Royal Gold Medal for Architecture, 1931". It bears a hand-written note "To my dear sister Mrs GA Webster from Edwin".
Edwin was father to a son, Peter, and a daughter, Sybil. Peter subsequently had two daughters, Brenda and Jenny. Both married Canadians in Toronto after which time I lost touch. Sybil's history is well documented in the literature.
Edwin's collection was shipped via Union Castle Line to Cape Town in 1947 where the family emigrated. A residue was preserved and in 1992 was returned to England on my resettlement here.
I find it difficult to assess any value to what is known above but perhaps now have a realisation on the strong connection between Sir Edwin and Sir David.
