Sonia Boyce

Born in London, Boyce studied at Stourbridge College of Art and Technology. Known for her figurative work which includes collage and mixed media. She had a solo show at the Whitechapel Art Gallery in 1988 and in 1998 at Cornerhouse, Manchester. Was included in The Other Story at the Hayward Gallery in 1989. She has exhibited widely in solo and group exhibitions including 'The British Art Show' (1990). She is co-director of the African and Asian Visual Arts Archive at the University of London. She was artist in residence at Manchester University in 1998. Boyce is a professor at Middlesex University and Professor of Black Art and Design at University of the Arts London. Her work combines a variety of media and addresses issues of race, ethnicity and contemporary urban experience, questioning racial stereotypes.
