Paul Yaw Boateng

High Commissioner to South Africa (2005-9). Born in Hackney of Ghanaian-Scottish heritage. Educated in Ghana and at Bristol University. Boateng came to prominence in London in the late 1970s as a civil rights lawyer based in Lambeth. He was MP for Brent South from 1987 until 2005. His political career has included roles as Junior Health Minister in (1998-9), Home Office Minister (1998-9), Minister for Young People (2001-2), Financial Secretary to the Treasury (2001-2) and Chief Secretary to the Treasury (2002-5). He was introduced as a member of the House of Lords in 2010.
