Wheatcroft was educated in Nottingham and France. With his brother Alfred he established the horticultural firm of Wheatcroft Brothers in 1919 specialising in rose growing. In 1927, they introduced the 'Princess Elizabeth' rose in honour of the new royal baby, the future Queen Elizabeth II. In 1948 they introduced the rose 'Peace' to Britain and in 1952 the 'Queen Elizabeth' from America. In 1962 he bought out the firm with his sons renaming it Wheatcroft Organization. He was a flamboyant publicist and in 1972 an appropriately bright red and yellow rose was named after him.
