Geneticist and economist, Bodmer's groundbreaking research explored the relationship between the immune system and genetics. This played a key role in the discovery of the system of human leukocyte antigen (HLA) and developed understanding and treatments of AIDS and cancer. After studying philosophy, politics and economics at Oxford, she became a statistician assistant at Cambridge University. She collaborated with her husband, the geneticist Walter Bodmer, with both joining the Cancer Research Fund in 1979 and establishing a laboratory in Oxford to research genetic variation in people. She was a founder of the European Federation for Immunogenetics and an honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians.
