John Gilpin
(1930-1983), DancerSitter in 2 portraits
Born in Southsea, Hampshire, Gilpin's career began as a child actor before studying at the Rambert School and joining Ballet Rambert in 1945. Became a principal with Roland Petit's Ballets de Paris (1948-9) before returning to Britain in 1950 to join London Festival Ballet (artistic director 1962-5). Created many leading roles and subsequently combined teaching with acting. Dancing with Life his autobiography was published in 1982.
