Winifred Nicholson
(1893-1981), PainterSitter in 1 portrait
Painter; studied with her grandfather George Howard, 9th Earl of Carlisle, then at Byam Shaw School of Art. First exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1914. Married Ben Nicholson (1920), held joint exhibition at the Patterson gallery (1923). Experimented with abstraction in Paris (1932-8) after the break up of her marriage. Later (1950s-70s) painted in Greece, Morocco, France and the Scottish Islands.
