Secretary of State for Work and Pensions from May to November 2005. Blunkett was educated at the Sheffield School for the Blind and the University of Sheffield. His early political career was spent in local government, on the South Yorkshire County Council (1973-7) and on Sheffield City Council (1970-88). He was first elected to Parliament in 1987 to represent Sheffield Brightside. From May 1997, he served as Secretary of State for Education and Employment and was Home Secretary from June 2001 to December 2004.
