Educated at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, Walter began her career playing with the Common Stock Community Theatre and the Scottish agitprop theatre group 7:84. Walter joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1980, becoming an Associate Artist in 1987. Her roles have included Ophelia in Hamlet, Viola in Twelfth Night and Elizabeth I in Peter Oswald's production of Mary Stuart. Other television and film work has included ITV's Law and Order (2009-11) and Atonement (2007).
