Jamaican-born Sanderson grew up in Wolverhampton and became Great Britain's leading female javelin thrower from the 1970s. She became the first British black woman to win an Olympic gold medal at the Los Angeles Games in 1984, and competed at senior international level until 1996. In total she competed in six Olympic games between 1976 and 1996. After retiring from sport, she became a television presenter and works for a number of children's charities and is a Board member of the Olympic Park Legacy Company.
