Chair of the charity Make Justice Work. Formerly in the Diplomatic Service he was Director of the Art Fund, the UK's largest independent art charity, from 1992 until 2009. He became a Trustee of the Ruskin Foundation in 1996. He was awarded a CBE in 2010 for his services to visual arts.
