Director of the Ashmolean Museum from 1985 until 1997. Formerly Director of Studies at the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art from 1973 until 1985. White began his career as Assistant Keeper of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum in 1954. He is a specialist in 17th century Dutch and Flemish painting.
