Writer and film director; initially working for the theatre, one of Leigh's early stage plays became his first feature film, Bleak Moments (1971). His play Abigail's Party (1977) was filmed for television and became one of Leigh's most celebrated comedic works. Other films include High Hopes (1988), Happy-Go-Lucky (2008), Another Year (2010), Mr Turner (2104) and Peterloo (2018). He has been nominated for an Oscar seven times.
