Detective story writer. Worked as a journalist before publishing her first novel From Doon With Death (1964) introducing her character Chief Inspector Wexford. Rendell's prolific output of almost 50 books has won her many awards including Crime Writer's Association gold and silver Daggers. Under the pen name of Barbara Vine, Rendell also wrote psychological thrillers such as King Solomon's Carpet (1991).
