Paul Scofield
(1922-2008), Actor(David) Paul Scofield
Sitter in 19 portraits
Known principally as a star of the British stage from the age of fourteen, Scofield made his film debut in 1954. In 1958 he appeared with Virginia McKenna in Carve Her Name With Pride. He won an Academy Award for his portrayal of Sir Thomas More in A Man For All Seasons (1966), a repeat of his stage success. Other film roles include King Lear (1971), A Delicate Balance (1973) and The Crucible (1996). Created Companion of Honour for his services to drama in December 2000.
