Robert Shaw

(1927-1978), Actor, playwright and author

Sitter in 8 portraits
After graduating from the RADA (Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts), Shaw joined the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre in 1949. He left the company in 1951 and had small roles in television dramas. Shaw's career was revived with the part of Dan Tempest in the TV drama The Buccaneers which ran for thirty-nine episodes from 1956. As an author he enjoyed success with a number of novels, including The Hiding Place (1959). In 1965 he was nominated for an Oscar for his role as Henry VIII in A Man For All Seasons. He eventually gained international fame after appearing in The Sting (1973) and Jaws (1975).
