Benny Hill
(1924-1992), ComedianSitter in 12 portraits
On leaving school at fifteen, Hill tried various jobs including as a milkman which would later inspire his popular song 'Ernie (The fastest milkman in the west)'. In 1947, after serving in the army and the army's entertainment unit, Hill began to tour pubs with a comedy routine. He began to appear on television where he became an international star through The Benny Hill Show (1955-1989). Famed for his 'seaside postcard' sauciness, Hill achieved international stardom. Film roles included The Italian Job and Chitty-Chitty Bang-Bang. By the 1980s Hill's humour began to be seen as out-dated and his popularity in Britain waned but recordings of his shows continue to be aired around the world.
