Philip Pullman

Philip Pullman's books include the best-selling trilogy 'His Dark Materials'. The third installment The Amber Spyglass is the only book for young people to win the Whitbread Book of the Year prize (2001) and to be long-listed for the Booker Prize. The trilogy has been adapted into a play and a part has been filmed. He began his career in the 1970s as a teacher and writing school plays. Pullman's first published work was The Haunted Storm, which jointly won the New English Library's Young Writer's Award in 1972. He stopped teaching and concentrated full time on writing in the mid 1980s. Pullman is also Honorary Associate of the National Secular Society.
