Born in Thakeham, West Sussex to actors Raymond Massey and Adrianne Allen, Massey made her acting debut aged seventeen in William Douglas-Home's The Reluctant Debutante. Important stage roles during her career included Laura Wingfield in Tennessee Williams's The Glass Menagerie (1965), the title role in Muriel Spark's The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1966) and performances in Harold Pinter's A Kind of Alaska (1982) and Moonlight at the Almeida (1993). Appointed a CBE for services to drama in 2005, Massey's autobiography Telling Some Tales was published in 2006.
