Educated at Harrow and Sandhurst, Lichfield served in the Grenadier Guards from 1959-1962 before becoming a professional photographer. He was quickly in demand for editorial work, including Life, Queen Magazine and a five-year contract with American Vogue given by Diana Vreeland in 1967. Lichfield's many royal commissions included the 1981 wedding of the then Prince Charles to Lady Diana Spencer. Lichfield was awarded Fellowships of both The British Institute of Professional Photographers and The Royal Photographic Society. He published many books on photography including Lichfield: In Retrospect, and his career was celebrated in Martin Harrison's major publication Perceptions: Patrick Lichfield.
