Bhikhu Patel

Born in Kenya, after taking his O-levels, Patel worked in a bank to save for a fare to England and the greater opportunities he saw there. Enrolling at Kilburn Polytechnic, he supported himself by working in a fish and chip shop. Graduating with a degree in Architecture from Bristol University he launched on a promising career as an architect. But in 1980, he abandoned the safety of a professional career for the riskier horizons of business. With his brother, Vijay Patel, Patel was voted Ernst and Young UK Entrepreneur of the Year in 2001. The judges commented that 'they have built a world-class business with consistent financial growth from humble beginnings that competes with the largest global players'.
