Samuel Devons

Born in Bangor, Wales. Studied at Trinity College, Cambridge. Senior Scientific Officer for the Air Ministry during the Second World War working in aerial defence and radar developments. Lecturer in Physics at Cambridge University and Director of Studies at Trinity College, Cambridge (1946-9). Professor of Physics at Imperial College, London (1950-55) and Langworthy Professor of Physics and Director of Physical Laboratories at the University of Manchester (1955-60). He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1955. Professor of Physics at Columbia University (1960-84). As Emeritus Professor since 1985, Devons has written widely on the history of science.
