Steven James ('Steve') Backley

Javelin thrower. Born in Sidcup, Kent .Backley won his first gold medal in the European Junior Championships in 1987. Established a new Commonwealth record throw of 91.46 metres in 1992. Won Commonwealth Gold medals in 1990, 1994, 1998 and 2002. In the Olympic Games Backley won Bronze in 1992 and Silver in 1996 and 2000. Awarded an OBE in the 2003 New Year's honours list.
