Madeleine Carroll

(1906-1987), Actress

Sitter in 15 portraits
One of the first Hitchcock blondes. Born in West Bromwich, the daughter of an Irish father and French mother. Studied at Birmingham University and became a French teacher, she was also a hat model before her stage debut in 1927 and film debut in 1928. Starred in Alfred Hitchcock's The 39 Steps (1935) and Secret Agent (1936) after which she moved to Hollywood appearing in numerous films including My Favourite Blonde (1942) opposite Bob Hope.
