Mike Phillips

(1941-), Novelist

Phillips was 14 when his family migrated to Islington from Guyana. A graduate in English and Politics, he holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Education from Goldsmiths College, London. He has worked as a journalist and broadcaster for the BBC, lectured in media studies at the University of Westminster, becoming a full-time writer in 1992. Best known for four novels of crime fiction featuring black journalist Sam Dean. Author of London Crossings: A Biography of Black Britain, and with his brother, Trevor Phillips, he wrote Windrush: The Irresistible Rise of Multi-Racial Britain to accompany the award winning BBC documentary series. He writes for The Guardian, and was formerly cross-cultural curator at the Tate, and a trustee of the National Heritage Memorial Fund and the Heritage Lottery Fund.
