Pianist and daughter of Erwin Stein, Stein was a close friend of Britten and Pears. For her wedding in 1949 to operatic administrator George Lascelles, 7th Earl of Harewood Britten composed the anthem 'Amo Ergo Sum', and in 1963 she commissioned him to write a piece for solo piano 'Notturno', for the first Leeds International Piano Competition. 'Billy Budd' was dedicated to the Harewoods, but when their marriage failed, Britten asked her husband to resign as president of the Aldburgh Festival. Stein would later marry Jeremy Thorpe.
