Howes first appeared as a child star in Thursday's Child (1943), followed by Nicholas Nickleby (1947), Anna Karenina (1948) and Fools Rush In (1949). She replaced Julie Andrews as Eliza Dolittle in My Fair Lady (1958) on Broadway and in 1963 received a Tony nomination for her performance in Brigadoon. Howes regained her screen presence with role of Truly Scrumptious in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968).
